The cream of British, US and European film talent was out in force at a glamorous
ceremony in London's Royal Opera House. A glittering array of stars walked the red carpet to
attend the UK film-event of the year. Slumdog Millionaire flew the flag for British films as it
bagged SEVEN awards. The movie, up for a possible 11, took the gong for Best Film and saw
Danny Boyle named Best Director. Slumdog star Dev Patel, who shot to fame in cult TV series
Skins, had taken his mother and sister to the glittering awards. He gushed: “I’m 18 and I’m at the
Baftas. Every year I used to watch it on TV and now I'm here. I can’t believe it.”Kate Winslet,
33, took Best Actress for her role as a Nazi concentration camp guard in The Reader – beating
Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep, Kristin Scott Thomas and herself in Revolutionary Road. Winslet,
who sobbed when she won two Golden Globes for her roles in the films, said: “I am not going to
cry. It’s overwhelming.” Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie left Covent Garden's Royal Opera House
empty-handed, but said they enjoyed the event. Angelina said: “We had a great time in London.
We had tea and scones today.” Asked if they were competitive over roles, she said: “We are not
that kind of family, we are very supportive.” But Pitt, who lost out on Best Actor to Mickey
Rourke for his role in The Wrestler, joked: “But we do arm wrestle.”
