On 10 -11th July 2009 The British Beach Polo Championships returns to Sandbanks, Poole for the second year. Top international players, celebrities and polo supporters will enjoy a festival of polo on the sand at Britain’s premier beach location. Six polo teams will compete for the title over the 2 days. There is also to be the added excitement of the England Beach Polo Team playing against South America on both days.
Beach Polo is a variation of Arena Polo which is now very popular worldwide. Beach Polo is played on the sand in an enclosed boarded arena measuring about 50 x 100 metres. Other than it being 3 a side rather than 4 and using a different size ball the ponies and equipment are the same as conventional grass polo. Beach Polo’s smaller playing area provides an intimate and exciting atmosphere for both players and spectators. The polo ponies love the sand - they can accelerate and stop fast and can turn extremely sharply. The players’ skill, in the saddle and with the ball, is tested to the full.
Sandbanks is probably the most exclusive beach community in the UK. It is easily accessible with a fast rail connection (100 minutes from London), good road access and 2 International airports within 45 minutes. The beach is unsurpassed holding a European Blue Flag (top accolade for beach cleanliness) for a record 20 years. There is the full range of accommodation, restaurants, bars and clubs.
The audience at Sandbanks will be made up of seasoned players and supporters of the game from across the country, and others with an appetite for the exclusivity and excitement that the event will offer.
The Teams will be of an extremely high standard. Players will include members of the England team and international players from around the world. The teams will be evenly matched. Players will engage with the sponsors and spectators both on and off the pitch.
The Beach Polo will be supporting The Heaton Ellis Trust and The Army Benevolent Fund .
At the British Beach Polo Championship this year you will see 6 teams of national and international polo players compete for the Championship Trophy. Many of your favourite players from 2008 will grace the beaches of Sandbanks in 2009. Full team line ups will be announced at the end of June. The England Team of Chris Hyde, Ryan Pemble and Simon Holley have experienced the sand at the launch in May and are looking forward to the challenge of the USA Team.
The British Beach Polo Championships combines this extremely exciting spectator sport with the spectacular surroundings of the most exclusive beach community in the country. To these ingredients add the finest of hospitality and good company and you have an experience to remember. The event’s corporate hospitality enjoys an excellent view of the polo arena.
