The Button Club’s Second Annual BloodLust Ball
Another Biting Success for Kaja Wunder and Henry Northcroft
The Old Finsbury Town Hall in Clerkenwell was transformed into Castle Dracula on Saturday night, for The Button Club’s highly exclusive Second Annual BloodLust Ball.
Hosts Kaja Wunder and Henry Northcroft welcomed guests into their labyrinth of coffin-busting mystery and forbidden pleasures. Thirsty vampires rolled up in hearses to taste the evening’s bloodthirsty entertainment, or made their way on foot through the streets of Clerkenwell dressed in gothic costumes to join the mysterious revellers. Taxis ground to a halt, and passers-by stared in amazement as vampires, blood-splattered demons and werewolves, journeyed towards the splendid Castle.
Two fierce torches burned brightly outside the Town Hall. I believe a full moon was shining upon Clerkenwell’s ghostly skies as ghouls and villains came in search of a graveyard romp. I watched as one guest, who was disguised as Hannibal Lecter, dared to step through the entrance into Dracula’s lavish, cobwebbed hallway. I followed him. A vampire bride serenaded guests on the violin as we wound our way up the winding staircase and into Dracula’s crimson quarters, where his throne, tombstone and coffins whipped fellow vampires up into a fever of excited chatter and anticipation. Countess Carmilla Karnstein and Prince Vlad ‘The Impaler’ greeted a theatrical troupe of witches, demons from Hell, werewolves, scantily clad victims, horny devils, mysterious cloaked figures, evil highwaymen, wicked ladies, zombies, vixens and heavily painted monsters.
I found myself clinking champagne glasses with a host of glittering stars. Hofit Golan looked vampish in a crimson cape, and Sophie Anderton wore a scarlet figure-hugging dress and long black gloves. Kaja Wunder looked elegant. Dressed as Countess Carmilla Karnstein in a shimmering black skirt and bodice, and with black plumage in her hair, she mingled with guests, including: Lana Holloway, Olivier Bassil and Eva Danenza. Henry Northcroft looked chilling in suitably gory makeup, as did fearsome vampire bride Martina Velika - those fangs!
A skeletal figure hung from the beautifully decorated gold ceiling in the main dance chamber. Guests lounged on the plush sofas, sipping cocktails accompanied by jazz from The Broken Hearts DJs, who looked like a combination of 1920s and 1940s vampires in their sparkly, gold dresses and pearls.
The party’s brilliant Production Manger, Jimmy Golding (Count Fang), introduced the party, and was joined on stage by Kaja and by Nick of Time, who belted out some great, tomb busting medleys. There were more surprises in store….
Count Fang introduced the Zombie Princess. Suddenly, from out of nowhere, a fearful fright appeared, dressed in what looked like sodden, mouldy bandages. Revellers crowded around her as she crawled and clawed her way like a wild, possessed demon through the gathering throng of guests. I asked my companion to let me see what was happening. “You’ll have sleepless nights,” he said. “Let me see!” I demanded. He moved away, and as partygoers gasped in amazement and horror, I watched as she chopped away parts of her anatomy, including her brains. I have no idea how this was choreographed, but everyone in the room wanted to watch. A bloodthirsty bunch indeed! One photographer couldn’t handle it and had to go outside for fresh air. I’m still having nightmares.
The Earthlights Boogie Band was the talk of the evening and brought fireworks to the dance-floor. They had everyone dancing.
A delicious and abundant feast of Mexican and Spanish cuisine by Freebird and Thierry Brun was served in Dracula’s ruby red dining room, and dainty blood cakes by Treacle made a delightful finishing touch to the BloodLust dinner, as did the fountain of chocolate blood.
