The 2006 Veuve Cliquot Gold Cup For The British Open Polo Championships at Cowdray Park.

The Final of the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championships, the world's premier pro-am polo tournament at 22 goal (High Goal) level, will be held on Sunday, 23rd July 2006, at Cowdray Park, Midhurst, West Sussex.

Inaugurated by the late John Cowdray, 3rd Viscount, in 1956, this year marks the Golden Jubilee of the Gold Cup, the most coveted trophy in the polo world.

The tournament to decide the winners of the 2006 British Open opens on Saturday 1st July. Over 40 matches will take place during the course of the series, leading to Quarter Finals on the weekend of 16/17th July, Semi Finals on Thursday 20th July, and the Final on Sunday 23rd July.

Cowdray's Polo Manager Chris Bethell predicts a bumper entry of 18 teams for the Golden Jubilee year including the welcome return of an Ellerston team. The last time Ellerston competed at Cowdray was when the late Kerry Packer announced his retirement from the English polo scene. His son, James Packer, is leasing the Stedham polo grounds, originally developed by Kerry Packer, for a two year period. The grounds which are located within two miles of the main Lawns grounds at Cowdray, are considered some of the best playing surfaces in the world. Last year's winners Dubai will defend the title with Adolfo Cambiaso, the world's number 1 player, hoping to make it to the Final from which he was side-lined in 2005 due to injuries sustained in a fall in the Semi Finals.

Veuve Clicquot enters into a twelfth year of sponsorship of the event which, with the leading champagne house's support, has developed into one of the most high profile days of the English sporting scene.
